The Serious FAQ

Question:

How do I change the Start Up screen for my Windows NT 4.0 Operating System?

Answer:

As with anything on this page, change your start graphic AT YOUR OWN RISK. Each system is different and the instructions below might not work for you. If you are new at this "computer stuff" you may want to leave your system alone. Remember, no joke graphic is worth your peace of mind. Also, since Windows NT is used a lot in the workplace we strongly recommend you make a copy of your original (standard) graphic, your boss may not have the same sense of humor as you.

The "Windows NiT Wit 4.0" parody graphic is a 256 color graphic intended for 256 color NT systems. In your \WINNT file there is a graphic titled WINNT256.BMP. Make a back-up copy of this graphic, a suggested name would be WINNT256bak.BMP. Download the "Windows Nit Wit" GIF (file name win-nitwit256.gif), convert it a Windows Bitmap using Lview Pro (or similar program). Rename the graphic WINNT256.BMP and place it in the \WINNT file.

If you are using Windows NT server the file name is lanma256.bmp and also is found in the \WINNT file.

We also have been told of a program called "ntdure" that will change your start up graphic. Again, we have not used it. If you try it, please let us know how it worked. Here is a link to the program from www.shareware.com
